Therapeutic Hula is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Therapeutic Hula is used for self-awareness, self-esteem, stress reduction, and mood management. Physical benefits include coordination, mobility, and strength. Students will learn how motion and emotion are interconnected while working larger muscle groups and improving their core.
Meet your instructor
Athaliah was born and raised in Hawaii. She grew up dancing hula, and eventually danced hula professionally while attending school to become a teacher. Athaliah continued her education to become a School Counselor. Her career brought her to Alaska where she now has the unique opportunity to blend her culture with social-emotional learning in the form of Therapeutic Hula.
WHAT SKILL LEVEL ARE THESE CLASSES FOR?
Our classes are designed for beginners, specifically students ranging from kindergarten to high school. Course content is designed to grow with your child so that skills are built upon and developed as they continue through the years. They will be introduced to hula fundamentals and implements. Later, older students will learn more complex choreography and get opportunities to explore choreography creation.
HOW LONG ARE CLASSES?
Classes run September through June on a weekly basis, excluding major holidays. Each week members will receive access to a 30 minute pre-recorded lesson covering basic techniques, followed by a live 30 minute group practice over Zoom for a total of 1 hour's worth of instruction.
WHAT MAKES THERAPEUTIC HULA UNIQUE?
With Hula's relaxing nature, students will learn powerful tools to overcome anxiety and stress. Therapeutic Hula combines culture, fitness, and coping skills (such as calm breathing and mindfulness exercises) to improve overall heath and wellness.
HOW IS ATTENDANCE MONITORED?
Zoom registration is required before joining each week's virtual lesson. Other than registration and participation in group polls and breakout rooms, no other forms of attendance will be taken.
WHERE DO I FIND THE VIDEO LESSONS AND ZOOM MEETING LINKS?
Once a student books a session, they can find the Zoom Meeting link in their confirmation & reminder emails, as well as in their member portal. Login to your member portal for access to weekly video lessons under My Account.
I WANT TO USE THIS CLASS FOR A PE CREDIT. HOW MUCH PRACTICE DO I NEED FOR THAT?
An additional 30 minutes a day of practice is recommended for anyone needing to meet semester hour requirements.
WHAT ARE THE PHYSICAL BENEFITS TO THERAPEUTIC HULA?
Physical benefits include coordination, mobility, and strength. Students will work large group muscles in easy to follow routines. Hula is a whole body workout that bolsters ab definition, back and hip strength, and helps tone arms and legs.
HOW DO VIRTUAL RECITALS WORK?
If your student wishes to participate in our virtual Zoom recitals, they will sign up for a recital time when dates are posted. These small group performances will include songs and dances learned throughout the semester, and will be recorded for families to download.
